The CORES (Children's Otolaryngology Residents' Emergency Skills) Course focuses on basic technical skills that junior otolaryngology residents and mid-level providers will utilize while managing consultations on the floor and the emergency room as well as assisting in the operating room. The morning session will include skills stations where residents will learn to manipulate and properly use an otomicroscope, laryngoscope (both rigid and flexible), and rigid bronchoscope. The afternoon will be divided into two components:
1) Skills utilization: managing epistaxis, performing myringotomies and tube placement, laryngeal and sinus surgery techniques, and performing emergency surgical airway procedures
2) Critical Thinking and Decision Making: Managing simulated airway emergencies using high-fidelity manikins.
The course is taught by Otolaryngology faculty from throughout the region. Scheduled early in their residency, the course “jump starts” the participants in teaching many of the basic skills needed throughout their clinical career.
CORES Course Goals
Upon CORES Course completion, participants will be able to:
-
Demonstrate working knowledge of the airway instruments (laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy), microscope, and associated video camera systems.
-
Assemble a rigid laryngoscope, bronchoscope, and optical foreign body forceps
-
Organize an OR airway endoscopy set-up
-
Learn basic suturing techniques
-
Obtain a working knowledge of the airway instruments (laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy), microscope, and associated video camera systems
-
Perform intubation using rigid and flexible laryngoscopes
-
Learn bag-masking techniques
-
Retrieve airway and esophageal foreign bodies
-
Perform cerumenectomy and myringotomy with tube placement.
-
Manage anterior and posterior epistaxis.
-
Gain experience in performing emergency cricothyroidotomy and tracheostomy.
-
Evaluate an emergency airway and devise a proper management plan.
Course Directors
Gi Soo Lee, MD, EdM
Dr. Lee is the Fellowship Program Director and the Residency Coordinator for the Boston Children’s Hospital Otolaryngology Department and is an assistant professor of Otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School. His graduate work at the Harvard School of Education concentrated on teaching methodology, assessment, and educational research techniques. In addition to his many educational duties, including simulation, he is involved with developing both new curricula and assessment tools for use in training programs.
Mark Volk, MD, DMD
Dr. Volk is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School. He directs the BCH Otolaryngology Department’s simulation activities in conjunction with Innovative Designs Systems (formerly the Boston Children’s Hospital Simulator Program). His academic interests include developing simulation-based courses to improve teamwork in the operating room, assessing the impact of simulation courses on simulation participants and providers, VR simulation, and using 3D printing to enhance Otolaryngology teaching.
